BELZEBUBS The Book Due Out 03/19/2019 - REVIEW

Belzebubs is a “trve kvlt mockumentary” focusing on the everyday challenges of family life: raising kids, running a small business, and making time for worship. Except the kids are named Lilith and Leviathan, the business is a black-metal band, and the worship... isn’t exactly aimed upstairs.

In a few short years, what started out as improvised social-media doodles has now become a wildly successful webcomic with hundreds of thousands of fans. The irresistible cartooning of JP Ahonen (Sing No Evil) combines relatable slice-of-life humour with over-the-top occult antics and references from metal music to Lovecraftian horror, making Belzebubs a devil of a good time.

Moral: Harsh vocals are not easy.

Whether you work in the music industry, are drawn to darker humour and chaos or just want a different kind of read, Bezlebubs has relatable and entertaining content for everyone. The following summarized Afterword by Lise Myhre (Nemi) stated it all perfectly.

"We all have a dark side. I've always felt the most at home with people whose darkness is on their exterior. More often than not, they tend to be all the more colourful on the inside. Metal was frowned upon back [in the eighties], to say the least. Many believed it to be corrosive to moral values; a gateway to drugs, alcohol, crime... to Hell, even. Three decades later, researchers find that metalheads in general report higher levels of happiness than their peers. Numerous studies all say that metal music is beneficial to mental health, as listening to extreme music is "a positive way of processing anger." It's still frowned upon a little, though. Thankfully. Being outcasts of sorts is part of what unites us.

Belzebubs is laugh-out-loud funny, sometimes sinister, sometimes cute, and every so often so close to home you start looking over your shoulders in search of hidden cameras.

This beautiful black and white comic is one of the most colourful series around."

Moral: Don't fart in tight pants

The best thing about Belzebubs though is that although it follows a short plot throughout, it doesn't need to be read page-by-page in order to enjoy it. Belzebubs is a book that can be left out on the bedside table and flipped through at random before dosing off, or it can be the next thing you can't put down during a long commute. Either way, the pages are full of creative little scenarios with just the right amount of sweetness to make the reader fall in love with the characters.

Moral: Tour life is not easy, bands work normal jobs back home too.

This hilarious hardcover is available now via Top Shelf Productions. The book is available for pre-order from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Indiebound, directly from the publisher, or anywhere books are sold. PLUS: Watch for the official Belzebubs album, coming in April 2019 from Century Media!

Moral: Metal band names are weird and their logos are hard to read, but we still love them anyways.

I wish I could share more, but you'll just have to pick up a copy of this series for yourself or follow Belzebubs on Facebook!
